The Karapınar region of Konya is a unique geography. The vast plains of Karapınar stretch out like a sea in the heart of Anatolia. However, beneath these landforms that resemble a sea lies a silent and eerie story from the depths of the earth: sinkholes.

Sinkholes are masterpieces of nature's quiet and patient work. As underground water slowly recedes, the voids within the earth gradually expand, eventually causing the surface to collapse and form these deep and mysterious pits. The sinkholes in Karapınar are like reflections of the voids in the heart of the earth. Each one is a silent witness to the once-existent water sources and the ever-changing nature.

Karapınar's sinkholes remind us of nature's patience and the inevitable transformation of time. These depths whisper to us quietly: everything changes, everything transforms. Life continues to flow in its unique rhythm on this land.

Creating a pattern

“A pattern is a design, arrangement, or regular way in which something happens or is done. “This can refer to repeated lines, shapes, or colors forming a visual design, a template used as a guide to make something, or a standard way of behaving or a sequence of events that repeats.”

So, how can we, as architects, use pattern as a tool for creating space?
As a tactic of spreading into the area, by creating a plane that works as a plan, or by creating the structure itself?
To answer these questions and make a decision first we need to create the pattern.

Starting to experiment with textures brings us a new question. Should textures come from randomness or can they be formed according to our own decisions?  Project area consisted of wide plains, except for sinkholes that could be described as large gaps. The fact that there were no
settlements or living creatures (trees, plants, etc.) that could be used to understand the scale and being among the sinkholes formed due to various deficiencies began to disturb me. This feeling of discomfort pushed me to establish different arrangements/orders. The idea of creating an order led me to a start of process where I found myself in the military formation drawings created by Denis Diderot.

The settlement, which started with the horror of emptiness, continues to establish itself with the inadequacies in the region. Practices of meeting basic needs (agriculture, energy production, poultry farming) create the need to store the products produced.

The development of technology in settlement brings techno-totalitarianism, and the victims of this power become so accustomed to control that they do not recognize their slavery. They continue to establish spaces in line with new fears and new needs. What they get is never enough. Every day brings with it a new order and a new continuity. Behind one water tank is another, and behind it is the one that has just started to be built...
