Katavothre Sanctuary
1- REMAINS OF MARKINGS
This formation, created by applying a certain pattern description, settles on the borders of the sinkhole and creates a chaotic structure, no matter how well-defined it seems. It follows a journey from unit to whole, from definition to randomness. Although the plan looks like a grid and regular structure, the angle and perspective change reveal a complex pattern cloud.
The structure can expand indefinitely, following the rules of the pattern. Can be spread around the sinkhole upon request.
PATTERN TO STRUCTURE
The pattern is formed randomly as a result of simple sticks coming together within certain rules. Although the variety of guides and moves is obvious as the number of sticks coming together increases, the variety of combinations also increases, creating a cloud of endless possibilities.
Each part of the steel structure is connected to each other only in the middle and at the corners, creating a huge structural cloud.
The area where the bedrock sinkholes we went to is located in the north of Karapınar settlement, close to the Aksaray border. Its difference from the constantly occurring small sinkholes here is that the parts that are connected to the cave ecosystem collapse as a result of very old and historical erosion.
2) Process: Later, this topography slowly began to move towards collapse.
3) Disconnection: When a sinkhole forms, it suddenly breaks away from its topography. It creates an isolated and majestic space around itself. Here you feel many emotions at the same time.
4) Re-Connection: The point I can touch starts from here. A place that reconnects the sinkhole's break with topography, the world and time, but will always exist and host a life in the traces left behind from the break...
5) Layers of Experience: What I observed during the field trip is that the series of experiences become different as you go deeper into a sinkhole. You reach a different layer at each different height, and a different feeling and experience at each different layer.
6) Idea: The idea of creating a structure that flows down from the perimeter of the sinkhole can constantly contain these layers of experience. It can lower the people here to the bottom of the sinkhole, and establish a connection between the earth and the bottom...
3- DESIGN
#Pushing the limits of architecture within the limitlessness of patterns
Katavothre Sanctuary built on the walls of the sinkhole brings people down to the bottom of the sinkhole, while at the same time forcing the people living there to establish a relationship with the sinkhole from different perspectives. This will not be able to overcome the rules of the pattern, which are established randomly but proceed amorphously to the unraveled parts of the structure that obey the rules of a pattern. However, just as we push the boundaries of architecture with patterns, these amorphous structures will also be formed in a way that pushes the boundaries of the structure. This structure, flowing from the wall of the sinkhole to the bottom, will create some spaces for people within this complex tangle of structures.
The spaces are embedded in this cloud-like structure. Amorphous shaped modules blending into the dissolution of the structure will provide accommodation for people who love extreme sports and mountaineering.
Modules Detail
The outer surface of the walls is covered with fiberglass material, painted with matte beige paint, the inside is covered with plywood. 6 cm wooden skeleton is between the inside and the outside, and the gaps between the frame are covered with stone wool.
5- SOME ATMOSPHERES
The location of the building on the wall of the sinkhole has its privacy and is isolated from the inside. Katavothre Sanctuary provided security and privacy with the benefits of the geographical and geomorphological features of the region. While the structure is invisible at first, it becomes visible as it gets closer and continues to hide most of it unless you approach the slope of the sinkhole.
